In our efforts to support the arts in our area, Foothills is
establishing a scholarship to be awarded to a high school senior
from one of five area schools who will be continuing his/her art
studies at the collegiate level. The schools involved are
Brushton-Moira,
Chateaugay, Malone,
St. Regis Falls and Salmon River.
The scholarship will be in honor of retired art teacher
Arnold
Sauther. It will be awarded annually at the
Robideau/Lamitie-King Middle and High
School Juried Show held in May of each year at
forARTSake.
Since so many local
artists know and respect Arnie, it was
decided to have a silent auction of local art work to raise money
for the scholarship. All donated works of art will be on display at
forARTSake,
St. Lucia’s Café, and at the Alice Hyde
Hospital Rehabilitation Center from March until May. A bid can be
placed on any work of art during this
period of time.
The final bidding
on 40 different works of art will
take place at the Malone Country Club on Friday, May 2 at a special event
to honor Arnold. A
buffet of hors d'oeuvres will be available and music will be
provided by Stuart Rowley, accompanied by Peter Brown.
Admission to the event is $25 per person. The public is
encouraged to come....join in the fun, place a bid, bring home a
work of art and support future artists from the North Country
Sincerely,
Beverly Quenville, Scholarship Chair

Arnold Sauther Art Scholarship Important to Future Artists
Arnold
Sauther was born and raised in Malone graduating from Franklin Academy.
As a participant with the Experiment in International Living, he studied
in Italy and Mexico to gain valuable multicultural
experience.
Receiving his B.S. from SUNY at Buffalo, he began teaching middle and
high school art (pottery, sculpture, photography, art history, art
appreciation, studio in art, drawing, painting, and advanced art as well
as independent study) at Salmon River Central School in Ft. Covington,
NY.
For the school year 1968-69, he received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach
in England. In 1969-70, he received a fellowship for his M.A. at Ohio
State. He returned to teach at Salmon River until he retired in June,
2004. In his 40 years of teaching, Arnold said he had many unique
opportunities. One of the highlights was his Humanities course for high
school students emphasizing a multi-media approach and art field trips.
He also taught art at North Country Community College. In 1985, he was
chosen to be a mentor teacher. He served as Department chair in the 80’s
and 90’s. In March, 1996, he and his students won the Mural Award for
work highlighting local Native American culture presented by St.
Lawrence Centre Mall in Massena, NY.
For 2 years, Arnold was President of Section 5 NYSATA (NY State Art
Teachers Association). In 1999, he received the Teacher of the Year Art
Award for Section 5 NYSATA. Arnold’ worked for years as a potter and
sold commercially at fairs and in local stores. In retirement, he has
shifted to painting and had his first art show at forARTSake in June,
2007, that was most successful.
Of special importance to Arnold is that many of his former art students
have gone on to become professional artists. He is encouraged by their
successes in art and was pleased that former students attended his art
exhibit. He states. “I continue to think of them and those future
artists still in high school who may need encouragement to pursue their
talents. This is why I am happy to be part of Foothills Art Society’s
Art Education Scholarship Program.“
