Hilary Oak, executive director
of the St. Lawrence County
Arts Council, had the very difficult
job of selecting four winners out of 134 entries submitted by 52
different artists in the Small Works Show which opened on Friday
at forARTSake. Jurying an exhibit which included both
professional and amateur artists and such a wide variety of
works was a challenge. "When I look at art of any kind I am
particularly drawn to pieces that tell a story, or transport me
to a moment in time. I look for pieces that really take me
somewhere special."
The four award winners are: Best
of Show - Valerie Patterson, a watercolor "At Your Mercy;" First
Place - Cynthia Wilson, a pastel "Baitfish Nightmare," Second
Place - Jeremy Hutchins, a photograph "That's Me...," Third
Place - Julie Davies, an assemblage "Paralllel Universe." Oak
felt that "the subject matter in each winning entry shares a
particular perspective. In addition each piece has strong
composition, excellent artistic techniques and good
presentation."
Other works in the show which
caught the eye of the juror and should be recognized are: the
rich color of Karen Lamitie-King's "California Dreaming," Judy
Tierney's "Floral Sunset," Bev Quenville's "Sunset I," Sandra
Pealer's "Family Farm." Strong composition and artistic
skill are evident in Charles Atwood King's "Small Brook I," Tim
Fortune's "Boulder," Neil McClain's "Last Ride," Caron
Roulston's untitled watercolor on rice paper. The two triptychs
- the "Waiting" series, photographs by Megan Manson and
"Cracking Ice/Mentalpause /Undercover, watercolor by Denise
Lamitie stood out for their ability to express ideas in
interesting ways. One piece which also stands out for the world
it captures is Valerie Paterson's watercolor "Dad Was Always
Leaving."
The Small Works Show can be
viewed during store hours: Tues. - Fri., 10 - 5 and Sat., 10 -
4. forARTSake is located at 393 West Main St. in Malone. The
show will remain hung until Feb. 24.
